Lessons Learned as a Philosophy Major

As a college student I think about my purpose in life a lot, and to be honest probably a lot more than most other students. That is because my major is Philosophy. Thinking about things like my…

Curiosity Campaign

For our curiosity campaign we chose to campaign about a prevalent issue among college students, body weight and image. Our goal was to spread the idea that people should not define themselves by the number that pops up when they step on the scale. We also tried to emphasize the idea that working out should be for the purpose of being strong not skinny. Health should not be defined by the number on the scale but should be defined by strength and feeling healthy on the inside. For all these reasons we chose to call our campaign #notanumber.

For the design of the project we chose to create a box out of poster board with two sides. One side was bright and colorful for people to write reasons why the workout and the other side was plain and black for people to write down something they are insecure about. We also chose bright colored sticky notes for the bright side and plain sticky notes for the dark side for people to write on. The side where people wrote why the workout was colorful because we wanted it to have a more positive feel. We chose the color purple because it is a representation of ambition and power and blue because it symbolizes confidence. We chose black for the insecurities side because that color is often associated with negativity. We designed t-shirts for ourselves and for those who participated we handed out stickers and socks that we created. We designed stickers with our hashtag on it and we ironed our hashtag onto the socks. We made these so people would have incentive to participate and could also help spread our message.

Our original idea was to make sweat towels with the hashtag on it but that did not go according to plan. If we were do make changes to this project I would have just started with the sock idea and not have wasted time and effort on the sweat towels. The sweat towels did not work because we could not find the right material and we had difficulties with cutting and sewing them. But in the end it all worked out.

I learned that when you are trying to promote an academic argument, it is important to create it for the audience at hand. The first step in doing so is choosing a topic that is relevant among the audience you are reaching out too or showing the audience why the issue is relevant in their lives. From now on I will look at campaigns differently because I know that there will always be more to the message than I get from just seeing the title of the project and walking by. Now I will look at it more seriously because it will probably be something that is relevant to my life and of importance. There is always going to be a lot of “noise” or campaigns of less importance so that is why it is important to make your campaign unique to break through all the noise. Putting effort into fine details and choosing designs for a reason are good ways to make a campaign stand out from the others. I would give the advice to make sure that when you are campaigning you not only make it clear what you are campaign but also why you are campaigning and why it is relevant to the audience.
