Realizing How Truly Amazing People Are

Today I learned a lot about others

For the last couple weeks in my Writing 150 class, we (the students) have been working on our “multimodal” projects. A multimodal project is a work that includes more than one medium of expression. We were told to feel free to push the boundaries of expression, but to not write an essay. Hallelujah!

Today was our first day of multimodal project presentations. Throughout the entirety of the class I found myself shocked over and over again at the creativity and level of high achievement that each of my classmates showed through their multimodal projects and their expressions of them.

I realized that I had subconsciously judged them throughout the semester based on things of insignificant nature such as their appearance, clothes, manner of speech, etc, and built a character for each of these people based on what I knew from them already. Appearances are often deceptive.

These presentations showed me that I was truly wrong in my initial judgements, and that every single student was absolutely incredible in some special way.

Whether we are aware of it or not, we judge others.

People often say that you never truly know someone, and I find that to be so true.

The amount of respect I have gained from this experience is profound. The amount of change I feel in my heart about other people in general is profound. Everyone is uniquely special and talented in their own way and I’ve learned that we should never judge harshly about people based on our shallow impressions of them because we don’t know their life experiences.
