Chapters 2 and 3

Summer for the most part was pretty average for Emily. She spent most of the days of summer at home playing video games, watching Youtube videos and her favorite anime. Sometimes Emily went to the mall with Nicole and other times Emily spent hours on the phone writing stories with her. Emily occasionally called Jane too because Jane’s home life was a lot more interesting than Emily’s. Emily was an only child with no brothers or sisters at home to play with but Jane was the oldest of four children. Emily enjoyed listening to Jane go on and on about what her sisters did that day to annoy her and sometimes Jane’s sisters would talk to Emily for a little while on the phone too.

Emily was 13 now so officially a teenager and officially able to stay home alone. She didn’t need to sit at her dad’s workplace every day during summer being bored because she wasn’t old enough to stay home alone. Her parents finally trusted her to be home alone, their only rules were Emily wasn’t allowed to leave the house, turn on the stove or open the door. Emily was told to only open the door for her parents and family members and to always look through the hole before opening the door. Emily had no problem with these rules because she was able to pretty much do whatever she wanted, she no longer had to wake up at 8 am every morning even during summer. Emily’s parents had the freezer stocked up with frozen food and the pantry was stocked with microwavable cups of ramen and microwavable stews and soups so Emily always had food to eat.

Some days felt a little boring though because if she wanted to hang out with Nicole or Jane, she could only hang out when her dad could drive her to the mall or to their houses. Her dad worked as a lawyer so he was working most of the time. This made it pretty difficult for him to find time to take her to the mall to see her friends. Emily’s mom didn’t work as much as Emily’s dad but she was usually pretty busy too. Most of the summer was spent like any other, Emily tried her best to find things that kept her from being bored but sometimes boredom just got the better of her. Then, one afternoon in July was when everything started to change…..
