To Build a Garden of Words. To Grow a Garden of Dandelions.

“Maybe one day I’ll grow a garden,” I keep telling myself. “I’ll pick it up as another hobby.”

How curious it is to plant a little seed and watch how something so small grows into a tree or a flower. Maybe a vegetable? What’s the secret? And why is it so grand?

“Maybe one day I’ll settle down,” I say.

I’ll watch myself drift slowly into the opposite end of the spectrum. From guns and hiking through jungles and deserts, I’ll become an old man surrounded by blooming fields with the distant memory of a time when I was young and wild and in the military.

It’s still hard to imagine myself so calm and slow, so in tune with the things I’d grow. I’ve ran a little over twelve miles this week and I’m still not sure how something like that will translate to the caretaking of roses. How do the rougher edges of a Marine translate to the gentle nature needed to care for roots and stems and petals?

“Maybe one day I’ll plant a tree and wait for Autumn. Maybe… just maybe that’s how my transition will be like too.”

However, in the meantime, I’ll keep running with my pack. I’ll keep trekking through the mud. I’ll keep watch of my brothers beneath the rain.

In the meantime, I’ll plant a garden of words, and my passion will remain this: setting the seeds of the stories I write with the hope that the message blooms in the hearts and minds of others.

In the meantime, I’ll water my sentences carefully. I’ll give the world a garden to see within their thoughts and hopefully, for now, that will be enough.

“Maybe one day I’ll change like the seasons. Maybe one day I’ll finally learn. Maybe one day I’ll grow some dandelions too.”
