My Dad Faces Racism In Every Airport

How do we stop this from happening while also keeping the airport secure?

Austin is a beautiful city. I’m sitting at my brother’s balcony and having a coffee. My dad is already up early and working in the garden, pulling shrubbery, cutting leaves, working the dirt. He loves it. I look at him pouring his soul out to help his son, my eldest brother, who lives here, and I get mad at all the racism he faced less than 48 hours ago. He took it in stride because he’s used to it.

Getting used to racism doesn’t make it right.

When we got to the airport, we were all dead tired and just wanted to sleep. The luggage preparation for a month abroad is not an easy task. We did it anyway. I went to sleep at around 1.30 AM and woke up at 5.30 AM. In retrospect, I should have worked harder to get more sleep during that night. Had I known what we would face, I may have dealt with it better if I was clear-headed and not sleepy.

We got past the security checkpoint and went on an Israeli airline to get to Barcelona, where things started to get complicated.

Just before we took off from Israel, I received an email from my airline, saying that the next flight is delayed and therefore they rescheduled the entire rest of the trip to tomorrow. We thought we were going to stay in Barcelona for the night. If we did, at least we would have enjoyed some extra sights. My airline had a different solution in mind when we finally got there.

We landed in Barcelona and thought we were going to meet an agent from the airline telling us what was up. That didn’t happen, so we went through with the in-transit line. We were the only ones on it. The security guys were not expecting us and had to set up the security lane for us. They looked pissed. We got to the connections area quickly, but no one was there to talk to us from the airline. I don’t know Spanish and a lot of staff members didn’t know English. My parents were tired from the flight and wanted to be done with it. Someone suggested we talk to a police officer.
