Infinite Shine

The retreat of night

Tony stayed awake on Tuesday evening well past midnight into Wednesday morning in his answer to the challenge that Lynn had posed for him.

Armed with a pen and a notebook he proceeded to write what would be the first of many poems. The title and the topic he chose was Dreams.

At one point, he thought he could hear the song of the same name quietly in the background.

It may have been his imagination, or it could have been playing across the house if his brother had left the stereo on low volume.

Through a process of marking out words and lines and brainstorming the options of rhyme, the poem began to take shape. It was three stanzas of four lines each. He couldn’t wait to see Lynn so that he could share his new creation with her.

Morning came quickly and Tony could clearly feel the weight of staying up so late. He was distracted during class, already thinking of ideas for a new poem. He even dozed off a few times.

When school was over, Tony came home and entered his room and proceeded to write a new poem. This one would be titled Music.

His second endeavor seemed to flow more easily than the first. There were still lines that were crossed out and replaced with others, but overall writing was becoming more natural.

It occurred to him that he should probably write in pencil.

Unable to contain the excitement of his new accomplishments, Tony picked up the phone and called Lynn. He wanted to see her that night in order to share the poems with her.

She was unable to meet with him, but made plans to see him the next evening which was Thursday.

Time seemed to drag on and on, but Thursday evening had finally come. Sitting on his front porch and waiting for Lynn’s arrival, Tony held a three ring binder with the two poems inside, protected by clear plastic sleeves.

He watched the sun set as he waited.

She is normally here by now, but I’m not gonna worry. She’ll be here when she gets here.

Thirty minutes later, Tony picked up the cordless phone and dialed her number. Her mother answered and told Tony that Lynn wasn’t home…
