What I Thought About Shazam

Unlike a lot of superhero movies, Shazam is not a household name. He is a member of the Justice League but he might be one the least known heroes out there. So a good trailer and a good origin story were needed to draw in an audience which may be why it was a family friendly movie.

Yes, it lacked a dark overtone like most DC Comics and may have been mistaken for a Marvel movie but the humor wasn’t as good as a Marvel movie. That doesn’t mean it wasn’t good but it can’t compare to the engine that is Disney. Even though the overtone was light, there were serious issues being tackled and I loved that it took that road. I was expecting a happily ever after and there was but not how we were lead to believe.

There were some shortcomings in my opinion. The dialogue could have been better and it makes you realize the movie might be mostly targeting families. The fight scenes don’t really come in until the end which is a long time to wait for something you came into the movie wanting to see. Building a great character requires a lot of detail and time but Shazam wasn’t really a superhero until the end of the movie.

I would recommend Shazam because of the strong message and because it has a lot of potential. What it lacks in this movie, I expect the future movies to fix. Origin movies are hard to make because you have to introduce the hero and explain why he is a hero and you have to do it right or fans will not get behind it. Shazam did a great job and I would definitely recommend it.
