Ethics

Think

Ethics to me means the dilemmas in everyday life that provide guidance in business. It is the study of proper business policies and practices that correspond with our beliefs and that guides values, behaviors, and decisions in our everyday lives, especially in the business world. I am an ethical person because I stand by honesty and refuse to follow the crowd if it violates honesty. I believe that doing the right thing will only help you in the end and people will respect and trust you more as a leader by remaining ethical. I influence others to be ethical showing them by example through my actions and decisions. I show respect to everyone no matter what their position, age, ethnicity etc. I listen to them attentively, valuing their contributions, being compassionate, and also considering opposing viewpoints.

My greatest ethical challenges as a student, employee, and team member is being afraid to speak out for fear of being criticized. Another ethical challenge that can be particularly difficult is choosing to do the right thing when its less beneficial to you, your team, company, or school related. Practicing ethical decisions and actions early helps for later in life when issues become more complex and detrimental if you make the wrong decision. To improve this, I can consistently adhere to my morals and following my ethical standards to help maintain goodwill and save me from potential serious problems in the future. As a 21-year-old in college, it is hard to always know what the right thing to do is and sometimes can become a gray area. Living by honesty and my moral values will help me later on when I have to make tougher decisions and help overcome those challenges.

I agree that ethical leaders have both individual as well as organizational responsibilities. Every day we have decisions to make whether it is deciding to pick up the $10.00 bill someone dropped in front of you and giving it back or exemplifying the right decision to make in an organization. It is a lot of pressure as a leader to be a role model figure and make the right decisions constantly. We are all human and it is of our nature to make mistakes every once in a while. I believe it is a social norm and okay to put the responsibility on leaders of an organization to be role models for their employees as long as they understand that sometimes we all make mistakes at some point.

I agree that a leader who is overconfident and sees themselves as powerful and above everyone else that it can lead to unethical practices. Sometimes thinking so highly of oneself can put one in the state of mind that everything they do is right and they can never be wrong. Such as in other countries dictating leaders can become so powerful and controlling that they believe nothing they do is wrong and think ethical decisions are based on their individual interests. Many leaders in recent years have been involved in career-damaging scandals that involved personal improprieties- extra-marital affairs most commonly. This is a particular problem for leaders because the higher up the chain leaders go, many begin to think that they’re unstoppable and no one will catch them for their wrongs. If companies are prospering under CEO’s leadership the CEO should have the responsibility to lead an upright personal life and still make ethical decisions as an example for the entire organization. People will act in the shadows of someone above because as society we believe they have that position due to their work ethic, likability, skills, and power. Another reason it may be more difficult for leaders to stay on the straight-and-narrow than regular people because the stress to be perfect and do everything right while being in the limelight. It is also very stressful to do everything right and make everyone happy with that decision. Sometimes the decision can be controversial and cause opposing conflicts which can make the leader seem unlikeable to some. I have experienced doing an unethical action because I looked up the chain and saw a superior doing something that I now recognize as improper. We become so influenced by our superiors that sometimes we believe it is the right thing or that we are protected because they’re doing it so how could we possibly be the one in the wrong.
